Obligatory Monday Afternoon Post-Concert Post - 140704 @ Freebird 2 - Big Bird
Note, at this concert, I was right in front of the bass monitor for most of the night. Unfortunately [or fortunately!] a lot of the video I shot is quite bass-heavy. This isn't really a problem, except sometimes it drowns out the vocals. So... apologies.
In a perfect world, Man, Space Papa and WHOwho would have a show together. While having similar qualities, this really would be an ideal show. Fans of each band tend to be fans of the other two. And these same fans are the type to show up early, grab a spot by the stage and hang out all night. The same fans to pore over every lyric and know them by heart. I don't blame them. Space Papas interesting and dream-like guitar riffs and beautifully simple lyrics get the crowd moving and singing as one. I want to say EVERY song of Space Papa is a crowd favorite, but maybe it is just such an ideal combination of great band, great music, and great fans.
You can see even here that right from the start of their sound check, the crowd gets pumped up for the show. Oh these fans.
This was the first time in a while that I sat back and instead of filming everything Julia Dream performed, I actually got to really FEEL and enjoy the music. Even if I weren't incredibly biased, I would absolutely love this band. To me, their music always stands out as incredibly beautifully crafted and well-played. Even though I have seen them many times, their music never fails to move me. Also, while the crowd was [due to the other bands scheduled], mostly more pop-rock type fans, people were instinctively drawn towards the stage as Julia Dream moved through their setlist. That's the thing, for me, their music draws me in.
Why is it I never noticed him tossing the pick after the solo before? And why is that ridiculously hilarious to me?
This was the first time I saw Oops Nice and I have to say... I loved them. Maho [vocals] is JUST the type of female lead vocalist I like -- strong, sexy, fun -- pretty much the whole package. The whole band is full of a restless energy that feels like it is constantly waiting to explode. With five very talented musicians, the overall sound of their music is rich and full, while still being an eclectic mix of styles. This really feels like a group that is on top of their game, loving what they do [I have NEVER seen a happier drummer]. I can't wait to see them again, and watch them go even farther up from here.
Oops Nice at the start of their set [I wish I had filmed more, they just got better as the set progressed]:
The first time I saw Life and Time, I had never heard of them. I had no idea what I was in for, in fact, there wasn't a published schedule so at that particular show, I had NO idea which band was which. When they came on, I thought.... "Who is this tall guy wearing a tank top and bouncing around while playing bass? And this singer.... ....NOT your typical singer... and WHY so much cowbell???" ...And while initially these things were question marks, they proved to be just the things that stand out and make me like them. Ok, let's be honest, the bass player jumping around was always a plus. And being next to the bass monitor in this case was actually a good thing, as I got to really hear Park Sunbin's bass sound [even though there was some electrical crackle happening, which was not his fault]. This is a band that I want to buy their CD and obsessively learn the lyrics, so I can sing along at shows. Yeah, they inspire that kind of feeling in their fans. Their fans -- of which I am definitely one.
It feels like I haven't seen WHOwho in an age. While I had to leave a bit early to catch my bus home and not be stranded in Hongdae overnight, I caught most of their set. They have changed the setlist up a bit since I last saw them, adding a slow song here, a cover there, but coupled with all the best of their own songs. You would expect a band with such upbeat, happy music to not be able to keep the energy up for the whole show. WHOwho doesn't have this problem. Every song they perform, they BRING IT. They bring everything they have. I LOVE that about them. I honestly believe that this [ok, well, aside from the infectiously awesome music] is what has made them so popular. You KNOW the whole crowd will be singing along with every line. You KNOW the whole crowd will be dancing around you and with you. You KNOW you will leave a WHOwho show feeling energized and ready to take on the world.
I particularly like this video of WHOwho with the false start. The whole crowd... "Ehhhh.........."
